S-Gate

S-Gate is the kind of small Japanese workshop that does everything itself. Founded in September 2009 by Shigemichi Sugiki in Shima City, Mie Prefecture, it handles making, selling, wholesale, sharpening and repair all under one roof. That matters more than it sounds: it means the person who ground your edge can be the person who restores it later, and there is no third party in the loop to lose the thread of how a particular pair was built.

The brand leans hard into the idea of “attachment,” the bond a stylist forms with a tool used daily for years, and structures its after-sales around that. Each pair is made individually, and the maintenance offered after purchase is tailored to the customer rather than a generic service slot. For a working stylist who hates breaking in a new shear, that continuity is the real selling point.

What it makes

The line is cutters and thinners, and the technique coverage is wide for a small house: wet and dry cutting, blunt, stroke, slide, chop and effect cuts, plus thinning calibrated across a broad 20 to 50 percent removal range. That spread on the thinning side lets a stylist pick a light blender or an aggressive one rather than compromising on a single tool. Pricing sits mid-range, roughly $200 to $400.

Buying one

S-Gate sells through its own online shop and runs its sharpening and repair direct. As with most single-workshop Japanese brands, this is a domestic-first operation, so buyers abroad should plan to order from the source.
