Michiko is one of those brands that blurs the usual geography. It is run out of Gainesville, Florida under JP Plan, LLC, and has been since 1996, but the shears themselves are forged in Japan. So the design and the company are American while the steel and the smithing are Japanese, a split that is more common than the marketing copy on either side usually admits.

The Painkiller

The brand’s signature is the patented Painkiller flexible-thumb design, and it is worth taking seriously. The thumb ring swivels to ease the wrist and shoulder strain that builds over a full day of cutting, the chronic occupational gripe of the trade. Patented ergonomics are genuinely uncommon in this market, where most makers simply offset the handle and call it done, so a brand that owns an actual mechanism for the problem stands on firmer ground than most. Steel and range

Blades are hot-forged from ATS-314, a cobalt-bearing stainless, paired with the brand’s vacuum heat treatment. The catalogue covers cutting shears, thinning models, left-handed pairs including the Lefty King, and accessories, with named lines such as the Anchor, Kata, Miyagi, and the King and Narita swivels. Listed techniques run to blunt, slide, and dry cutting and texturising.
