Stellite Alloy Scissor Blades

Over half cobalt, effectively rust-proof, and rated for thousands of cuts between sharpenings.

Stellite isn’t a steel in the strict sense — it’s a cobalt-base alloy, more than half cobalt, originally developed for industrial wear surfaces and turned to scissors by makers chasing the absolute limit of edge longevity.

What makes it different

Because it’s cobalt-based rather than iron-based, Stellite behaves unlike any conventional stainless. It’s non-magnetic and essentially rust-proof — a genuine advantage in a salon full of water and chemicals. More importantly, it resists wear to a degree ordinary steel can’t match: Mizutani rates its Stellite blades for thousands of cuts between sharpenings. Cutters describe the close as soft yet firm — the blade bites cleanly without the harsh “crunch” of a very hard, brittle steel.

Where it sits

This is the ceiling of the market, and it’s priced accordingly. Stellite makes sense for the highest-volume professionals who genuinely cannot afford downtime between sharpenings and who cut enough to feel the difference. It also demands an authorised sharpener — the alloy is unusual enough that the wrong service can ruin the edge.

Brands to look at

Mizutani is the brand most associated with Stellite in hairdressing, typically in its Acro line. If you’re not yet cutting at that volume, a cobalt alloy gives you much of the durability for far less.
