Samurai started in Newcastle in 2006 with a simple idea: import Japanese-steel hairdressing scissors and sell them at a medium price that punches above the ticket. It began as a distribution operation, and the steel story, J420 and J440 stainless plus Hitachi steel on the better lines, has been the brand’s identity from day one. None of those are exotic grades, but they are honest, corrosion-resistant alloys that take a decent edge, and that is the whole proposition: real Japanese steel without a premium price.

How the range is tiered

The lineup is built as a ladder of three families. Shimasu is the entry point, Tora is the early-professional step up, and Hasaki sits at the top. That structure is genuinely useful, because it lets a student start cheap and move up a tier as their hand develops without leaving the brand. (The original 2006 lines, Classic Pro, Fusion and Matrix, have since been retired in favour of these.) Across all three you get cutters, thinners and left-handed models, covering blunt, slide and point cutting plus volume and texture control. Pricing sits in the budget band, generally under $100, which keeps it firmly in first-kit territory.

Where it lives

The thing that made Samurai familiar to a generation of British stylists is shelf presence. It is carried in over 400 Sally Beauty outlets across the UK and Ireland, which is a level of visibility most small scissor brands never get. You will also find it through Direct Hairdressing Scissors and the brand’s own site. The trade-off is geography: outside the UK and Ireland it is much harder to find, so North American buyers would be ordering from British retailers. For students in its home markets, though, the combination of Japanese steel, a tiered range and easy availability is a sensible first buy.
