ZEN MASTER

Zen Master is an American brand with a Japanese heart and a hairstylist’s instincts. It runs out of Los Angeles under KB Hair Concepts LLC, founded by Sam Papas, an Australian-born stylist with more than thirty years behind the chair. That working background matters here, because the brand is built less around manufacturing scale and more around the question a stylist actually asks: does this thing feel right in the hand all day.

A sword-forging lineage

The blades come from Japan. Zen Master says its shears are handmade by Japanese craftsmen who carry traditional sword-forging principles into the blade profiles, paired with modern ergonomic design. The brand traces this to a craftsman it calls Master Ono, who reportedly began as a sword-forging apprentice over fifty years ago before moving into scissor production. Steel is VG-10, a cobalt-and-molybdenum stainless alloy that holds an edge well, which is a sensible choice for shears meant to do a lot of varied work.

And the work is varied. The technique list is one of the longest on the site, running from wet and dry cutting through slicing, point, slide and blunt cutting, scissor-over-comb, channeling, power cutting, and a full spread of texture and volume control. The range itself covers cutting and thinning shears, left-handed models, and accessories.

Pricing sits in the premium band, roughly $400 to $800. To match that, Zen Master leans on consultations by video, phone, text, and social media before you buy, which is unusual in the shear world and genuinely helpful if you’re unsure which profile suits your technique. Founder Papas cites credits including Creative Director of Hair for the Academy Awards Gala and work with Versace.
